AMD6 Joe Oliver

Diese Woche habe ich reddit.com auf Deutsch gelesen. I habe gelernt, dass reddit "subreddits" für Deutsch studentin hat, und auch gelernt, dass There is an entire series of German subreddit pages. 

Erste habe ich diese Artikel, heisst "Common words and phrases they didn't teach me in German class," gelesen. Viele Menschen habe geschrieben, dass sie haben unique things gelernt. I was glad to see many things I already knew, namlich the different connotation of the word Freund/Freundin. 


That Artikel ist auf Englisch geschrieben, so I wanted to spend the rest of my time delving into the actual Deutsch subreddits as a challenge. So ich habe "reddit.com/r/fernsehen" gefunden. Dann habe ich für gegen dreissig minuten diese Artikel gelesen. From the title (Fernsehr vs. mediathek) I guessed it had something to do with debating if TVs were better than some other type of media technology, perhaps something wie Netflix oder Hulu, if they have that in Deutschland.



It was a little bit hard to read because, like most people on the internet, the author didn't seem to use perfect grammar/spelling. I did gather that he/she doesn't have time to watch TV and doesn't miss it, because the best shoes "seltsame timeslots haben" = have strange timeslots. Then it's a bit fuzzy because I had to look up several things, but I think this sentence: " ich hab mich an dieses on-demand glaub ich einfach gewoehnt und kann dem normalen fernsehn relativ wenig abgewinnen, abgesehen von dumpfem hirn-ausschalten." means that the author is used to watching things on demand (a la Netfilx), and can't get into regular TV aside from (abgesehen von)  "dumpfern him-ausschalten." 


Then I saw a comment that seemed to be talking about online TV, because I caught a full sentence nearly "dass man aktuelle Programme nur eine Woche lang sehen kann," i.e. you can only watch programs for a week. 


I can see that I still have a lot to learn but it's really cool to be able to sort of understand actual conversations between German people. The cooler part is that if I interpreted those parts of the conversation right, then they are just like lot of things I've seen/said on reddit in English, z.b. how TV is hard and sort of lame to watch regularly after you are used to watching whatever you want whenever you want online.



Oh, and I also found this image on the subreddit for students of German. There's a bad word in it though. 

AMD 6- Facebook

For my final AMD vor der semester ich changed my facebook en deutsch. Ich sehe around meine page. Ich saw that the friends as Freunde und mutal friends as gemeinsame Freunde. For the news feed it gives the time of the en Deutsch. So instead of 20 minutes ago it would be vor 20 minuten, or if it is 2 hours they have vor 2 stunden. Instead of liking something it is gasëllf mir. I also saw "hat seinen Beziehungsstatus von „in einer Beziehung“ zu „Single“ geändert." which is someone becoming single after being in a relationship. After looking around of a while I had a conversation with my friend who lives in Germany. We met when he came to Petoskey for a foreign exchange and we became good friends. We had a facebook chat. We just really went over the basic vocab. Guten Tag, und es geht's di?, es geht mir gut was his reply. The conversation kept going like this. I also asked how the weather was and what he was did last weekend. It was really nice to talk to him again.

AMD 6

Diese Woche for AMD I decided to read some of the Grimm Brother fairytales in German. I read Der Froschkonig, Rotkappchen, Sneewittchen, und Aschenputtel. All of these stories were so different from the AMerican versions. I understood a lot of the words I was reading and the words I couldn't understand I made out because of the context. I was shocked at the gruesome stories that our fairytales originated from. I kind of like them better though. The Grimm Brothers didn't give kids false hopes, if anything these gruesome tales tell the truth about life. They may over do the dark side a little it, but it is better than the cheesed up version that America sells to little kids.

Out of all of these tales that I read I think that Aschenputtle was my favorite. I love how at the end the birds peck out the eyes of the two evil step sisters. The way the Grimm Brothers wrote this story just makes it so much more intriguing.

After reading the German versions of these stories I don't know if I can ever watch the American versions again!

Welcome to our class blog!

We will be using this blog throughout the semester for two kinds of assignments:

1. Once per chapter, the homework plan will direct you to post a response to the culture readings for the chapter on the blog.

2. Roughly every other week, the homework plan will direct you to post here for your Abenteuer mit Deutsch (AMD) assignment. First you do a fun activity that involves German, then you post about it. You should spend an hour total on this (maybe 45-55 minutes doing something, 5-15 minutes posting about it). See Was ist ein AMD, AMD Ideen and Beispiele for ideas. This should get you excited about the kinds of things you can do!
